This disc was recorded live at the Wind Up Space in Baltimore, MD in April of 2010. I can't say that I had heard of either members of Herb's trio here although Mr. Robertson has had a knack for finding kindred spirits around the world as his more than a hundred discs do show. This is indeed a strong, creative and restless trio who take their time to build and work together. The recording is warm, clean and well-balanced as if we are sitting upfront at their set. Herb himself is an unstoppable, free spirit who is always on and soars with quick lines of notes on his trumpet. The first long piece is some 41 minutes long and unfolds slowly, organically with each member of the trio taking their to stretch out. There is air of suspense as they ascend together with quiet and also more intense moments balancing the ride. I am reminded of one of those loft jazz sets during the seventies where the musicians took their time to create a captivating environment. It was or is not about the solos but about the way each note counts and is placed just right. Like a story unfolding chapter by chapter. This disc is nearly 74 minutes long and it works successfully throughout its long duration.
